of Ceylon, and I now transmit a letter from Mr. Rennie to the Colonial Secretary in which, whilst expressing his grateful acknowledgments for this mark of your Lordships' Confidence, he explains the impossibility, owing to recent illness, of his accepting that appointment at once.
I very much regret that for this reason there appears little prospect of Mr Rennie's retaining his present office here, but trust, as he is a meritorious and able Officer, he may meet every indulgent Consideration at your Lordship's hand, and be allowed a reasonable time to revisit England and obtain adequate medical advice before his absolute acceptance or rejection of the offer made to him is insisted on.
His position is one of considerable difficulty and embarrassment at this moment, and I shall be glad to learn that his request can be conceded.
I have the honour to be,
My Lord,
Your Lordships' most obedient humble Servant,
R. G. MacDonnell
Governor.
